Patriot's/Marathon Day Musings
And a couple of great podcasts about feeding and preventing eating problems in kids
This is going to be a super quickie hello this week. I’ve been committed to sending out Nourishing Words every other week, and I want to thank those of you who have shared with me in one way or another that you enjoy these nuggets.
Today is Patriot’s Day and Marathon Day in Massachusetts. No, I did not wake up at 4 am to watch the reenactment and Paul Revere’s ride through Lexington. (There were plenty of tourists there, and they didn’t miss me.)
This year, the town of Lexington is adding a monument to honor Women in American History alongside all the Minutemen in stone everywhere. My dance troupe of women aged 40+ was asked to be a part of the honoring of this statue and the historic town of Lexington’s 250 years. It’s about time we noticed that people of all genders were part of our history, too!
It’s also Boston Marathon day. I’m excited to cheer on my friend Adrienne and my assistant Julianna as they run to honor loved ones who have battled cancer. Adrienne is running in memory of her dear friend and colleague, Jaime, who passed last year at the age of 34. Jaime had a famous “bucket list” and focused on completing those items before her death; at her memorial service, she tasked all of us with creating a bucket list and truly doing the things.
Running the Boston Marathon was one of Adrienne’s bucket list items. If you haven’t donated already, here is her page (she’s nearing her financial goal, but not quite there yet). For those who don’t know this, training for 26 miles is not all the Marathon entails; raising funds for a charitable cause is another monumental task. Proceeds from Adrienne’s run go to Dana Farber Cancer Center.
Since I’m cutting this newsletter short to do jumping jacks at mile 18 with a group of friends, I’m leaving you with a couple of podcasts that dropped this week. I recently spoke with Christy Harrison on the Food Psych Podcast and Beth Basham of the Beyond Intuitive Eating Podcast. I hope you’ll enjoy these conversations as much as I did. We discussed feeding children and talking about bodies and social media with kids.
Another reason this newsletter is short and sweet: In the next two weeks, I’ll be traveling to Syracuse, NY and Bar Harbor, Maine to speak at conferences about my new book, Nurture: How to Raise Kids Who Love Food, Their Bodies, and Themselves. I’ve really enjoyed the in-depth conversations I’ve had with parents and professionals on this book tour.
And I look forward to getting back to writing when some of these promotional shenanigans wind down.
In the meantime, I hope you are stopping to notice the flowers (in all the forms that flowers take in our lives). I’m wishing you Spring warmth and rebirth—and perhaps considering your own “bucket list.” Life is tremendously short. Make it sweet.
With love in this shared life journey,
Heidi
Thank you for this post and for your beautiful words Heidi, as always! ♥️
